GAINSCO was established in 1978 by Joseph Macchia who was the son of a milk man. Graduating from university he then set off to serve his country. When he came home he worked for years in the insurance industry. Macchia in 1978 borrowed $500,000 dollars and set up headquarters in Fort Worth, Texas. By the time he had established GAINSCO he had already perfected his own underwriting policy, which would allow his company to have low prices while minimizing risks. GAINSCO Insurance offers: auto insurance, life insurance, health insurance, and life insurance. GAINSCO insurance is also traded on the New York stock exchange under AMEX:GAN.

Today, the only policies written by GAINSCO Auto Insurance are non-standard personal policies. GAINSCO Auto writes these policies based on classes of risks, which are usually not insured by most automotive insurers. Most of these policies are written in order to achieve state law compliance on the behalf of the policy holder. Non-standard insurance is available in the following states: Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Nevada, New Mexico, South Carolina, Texas and also in California.
